'Especies en extinción' es el último libro del escritor y periodista Juan Cruz, un recuerdo de sus años al frente de la editorial Alfaguara, con el subtítulo 'Memorias de un periodista que fue editor'. Desde el conocimiento profundo de ambas disciplinas, no duda Cruz al asegurar a Europa Press que "en España los gobiernos se han olvidado del libro eje de la cultura". "Y eso está perjudicando gravemente la consideración del editor, de las editoriales, de la escritura en general, en la sociedad contemporánea", plantea con cierto pesimismo, antes de apostillar que "lamentablemente, no hay parangón, en lo peor, a la cultura española de hoy desde el punto de vista del fomento a la lectura". Acerca del título, Cruz recuerda que inicialmente iba a llamarse 'Platos chinos' por consejo de Arturo Pérez-Reverte y de Manuel Vicent, aunque finalmente, por consejo del editor de Tusquets, Juan Cerezo, cambió a su denominación definitiva, "pues trata del periodismo y del mundo editorial, ambas efectivamente especies en peligro, pero que tendrán una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra".
