Cuando Henry Buckley cruzó los Pirineos en 1939 con los restos de las derrotadas fuerzas republicanas españolas, llevaba informando diez años desde España, fue testigo de las grandes batallas de la Guerra Civil y se ganó la reputación de ser el mejor corresponsal extranjero de los que cubrieron el conflicto. Al año siguiente ya había escrito su experiencia de los turbulentos años que condujeron a la guerra, 'Vida y muerte de la República española', enmarcando el conflicto dentro de una lucha más amplia contra el fascismo que, según predijo, envolvería a Europa. Pero una bomba alemana cayó sobre el almacén de Londres donde guardaba las copias, destruyendo casi todas. Permanecieron como piezas de coleccionista hasta este mes, cuando finalmente se ha publicado una nueva edición.
