Este fascículo de etnología histórica versa acerca de las imágenes religiosas que se veneran en Charapan, una comunidad asentada en la Sierra Purépecha de Michoacán. Tales imágenes, denominadas genéricamente “santos”, aunque también incluyen cristos y representaciones de diversas advocaciones marianas, ocupan los altares familiares y los de las capillas de barrio y el templo parroquial, amén de estar presentes al aire libre en las inmediaciones del casco urbano y en otros sitios. En conjunto, conforman una multitud de “santos” que, en sentido figurado, conviven y se interrelacionan con la población, la cual les rinde culto y les sirve a cambio de sus favores e intercesión. En tanto el pueblo purépecha nació como un pueblo cristiano, los santos patronos religiosos y sus representaciones que adoptó cada poblado, cada uno de sus barrios internos y cada grupo doméstico, fungieron como elemento religioso de cohesión e identificación de sus integrantes, en tanto los congrega en torno a devociones propias.
