This book presents a discipline-based teaching and learning center (TLC) as an effective model for providing professional development to faculty and graduate students. It provides a theoretical and practical guide to implementing a discipline-based teaching and learning center. In addition to explaining the research base for this model of professional development, it gives guidance and resources for creating a disciplinary-based teaching and learning center and conducting professional development activities specifically tailored for science faculty and graduate students. The volume introduces three main concepts as the theoretical foundation and guiding principles for the TLC?s work: (1) Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), which represents the integration of the relevant content and best pedagogical practices for that content; (2) student-centered teaching approaches to engage students in their learning and build a deep, lasting understanding; and (3) faculty learning communities (FLCs) in which faculty with similar teaching interests collaborate to work on curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment. These three concepts frame a comprehensive set of professional development resources and activities that provide the support necessary to implement and sustain cultural change at the departmental or college level.?
